Boy Scouts Committee Takes Major Step Toward Ending Ban on Gay Leaders

Last month, the BSA’s own President, Robert Gates, said the homophobia had to stop or the organization wouldn’t be around much longer.

And now the Executive Committee has taken a major step toward fixing that problem, says Chris Geidner at BuzzFeed:

A key leadership panel of the Boy Scouts of America voted unanimously last week to end the ban on gay leaders in scouting, the organization told local leaders on Monday.

The resolution passed by the committee does not require councils or troops to allow out gay leaders, but lifts the prior ban on such leaders. Specifically, the resolution “affirms the right of each chartering organization to reach its own religious and moral conclusions about the specific meaning and application of” the organization’s values.

So individual troops, many of which are run through churches, could continue the ban if they wanted to (and you know they will), but the more tolerant, inclusive troops wouldn’t be punished for doing the right thing.

It’s not perfect, but it’s better than before. It also means that gay scouts, who were finally welcome in the organization unless they committed the sin of turning 18, could soon return to the organization and pass on their wisdom.

A final vote will take place in two weeks. It’s about damn time.

For Certain Christians, Lying for Jesus is Justified in the Abortion Wars

Leviticus 19:11 makes clear: "Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another."There's quite a bit of the Bible that conservative Christian activists tend to leave out, but Biblical prohibitions against lying are routinely given short shrift by those intent on seeing God's will done on Earth. We don't have to look far for examples of it -- from Christians arguing that LGBT people are predators to politicians pretending that being gay is a choice, these lies are common. The Washington Post has a good look at another popular outlet for faith-based lying: the abortion debate, and the notoriously deceptive idea of "crisis pregnancy centers."
